In a recent conversation, Alex Willemnsen, the Dispatch Manager at STT Logistics, shared his valuable perspective on the logistics industry. Specifically, he highlighted the crucial role of drivers and the complexities of their daily work. Willemnsen emphasized that drivers are the lifeblood of the freight business and that their work is often underestimated by clients and brokers.

The Harsh Reality of a Driver’s Job

Many people assume a driver’s job is relatively easy, but Willemnsen clarifies that it takes a great deal of practice and skill. In fact, the job goes far beyond just driving. For instance, drivers must:

  • Get up, go find their truck, turn it on, and hook up the trailer.
  • Drive extremely long distances, sometimes 300 miles just to pick up a load and up to 2,800 miles for delivery, which can mean being away from home for a week or more.
  • Operate a truck that can have up to 18 speeds and requires a special license.
  • Secure the load themselves, which includes knowing how to use chains and straps. Furthermore, they often don’t receive help getting machinery onto the truck.
  • Coordinate and supervise when a crane is used or a third party is hired, as they want to ensure their equipment is not damaged.
  • Arrange for permits for their route, especially when they need escorts or “pole cars” for oversized loads that must follow them for the entire journey in certain states.

Ultimately, Willemnsen reminds us that behind the wheel is a human being with a family and responsibilities, and that without drivers, the industry could not function.

What Sets a High-Quality Driver Apart

According to Willemnsen, a high-quality driver is distinguished by their experience and professionalism. Therefore, an experienced driver is proactive and communicative. This is noticeable on the phone, as they take control of the call and demonstrate a deep knowledge of their work.

The characteristics of a great driver include:

  • Having a plan: For example, a good driver has already thought about the route, truck stops, and where to sleep.
  • Knowledge and confidence: That is to say, they know how to load machinery, often citing their experience with specific machines.
  • Preparedness: In addition, they can immediately provide their DOT or MC (Motor Carrier) number, as it is a fundamental part of their business.
  • Asking questions: Finally, they inquire and want to know more about the client, the pickup location, and the purpose of the transport, which inspires confidence.

The Dangers of Choosing the Cheapest Driver

On the other hand, Willemnsen advises clients to be wary of drivers who offer prices that are too low. In his experience, these drivers often lack experience or don’t take the job seriously.

Red flags to identify an unreliable driver include:

  • Saying yes to everything: A driver who accepts any load without objection or negotiation is often a red flag.
  • Excessive insistence: In other words, if a driver repeatedly contacts you or becomes very insistent on getting the load, it’s suspicious. This could mean they are not driving, loading, or doing the normal tasks of a driver, but instead are constantly on the phone.
  • Lack of experience and honesty: A driver who has been in the business for a short time and is not proactive or transparent about their lack of experience is a risk. Willemnsen clarifies that there are honest, new drivers, but the ones who try to hide their inexperience are the ones to avoid.

Willemnsen concludes that these are the red flags that help minimize the risks of a damaged or stolen load. Therefore, his advice serves as a vital reminder that choosing the right driver goes far beyond price, and that experience and professionalism are what matter most for ensuring successful freight transportation.
