Freight broker Jorge Castro: “I provide peace of mind to people in the equipment supply industry.”

Height Surprises? No Problem

When STT broker Jorge Castro was tapped to move a 58,000 lb Extec Trommel from Indiana to Kentucky, everything seemed routine.

That is, until it wasn’t.

“The customer originally told us it was 13 feet tall,” Jorge explained. “But when our carrier arrived on-site and measured it, we realized it was actually 13 feet 9. Nine inches is a big difference in this business.”

That discrepancy instantly elevated the job to a more complex—and costly—oversized load. Following the original plan, additional escorts and bucket trucks would be required due to height restrictions, pushing the quote up by as much as $10,000.

Power-Only Thinking

Jorge wasn’t about to spring a surprise $10,000 bill on his client. Instead, he looked for a smarter, more strategic approach.
“We offered to haul it as a power-only move instead,” he explained. “That gave us more flexibility and allowed us to stick to the original quote.”

With power-only loads, STT provides just the tractor and the driver—not the trailer. It’s a great solution when the equipment being moved already has wheels or doesn’t need to sit on a standard trailer. In this case, the Extec Trommel could roll on its own, making power-only a great fit.

Extra Backup, Just in Case

But Jorge didn’t stop there. With the machine sitting idle for five months, he knew things could get bumpy. So he added a built-in safety net: a dedicated road service vehicle to shadow the entire route.

“We wanted to make sure we were covered in case anything happened,” Jorge said.

That extra layer of support meant the service team would be right behind the load and ready to spring into action, should they need to…

Blowouts & Backups

Sure enough, Jorge’s foresight paid off just 150 miles into the haul. One of the Trommel’s tires gave out. This is the kind of issue that can stall a job for hours, or even days. But not this time.

“The service team was all ready to go,” Jorge said. “When the tire blew, they jumped into action. Within minutes, they had it changed, using the exact model we’d brought along..”

Instead of delays or a blown budget, STT delivered exactly what was promised: a smooth, same-day delivery, with no extra costs to the customer.

Seems innocent, doesn’t it? But this Extec Trommel was certainly full of surprises! Nine inches taller than expected and with a blown tire mid-journey, it could have been a logistical nightmare. As ever, STT handled every twist with ease and expertise

Trust, Flexibility, and the Right Team

Throughout this haul’s various hiccups, Jorge kept the job running smoothly by staying calm and creative.

“The customer really appreciated that we didn’t change the price,” he said. “We stayed transparent, adapted the plan, and made sure the equipment got there on time—safely.”

For Jorge, it’s all about staying proactive and putting the customer first.

“You can’t control surprises in logistics, but you can try and plan for them, and you can definitely plan how you respond. At STT, that’s what we do best.”
